GUITAR HUB: DROP-IN WORKSHOP

Updated: Mar 18, 2023

Join us: It's never too late or early to learn to play the guitar.

guitar jam, guitar group lesson, jam pop songs, all levels, electric or acoustic

Every Saturday Morning (Except during half-term) from 10:30am - 11:30am at Crawley Museum

Week 4: Sat 18th March

We started a warmup using Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits)

|: D / / / | C / Bb / | A / / / | A / / / :|

Using The 'A' Shape bar Chord on 5th String & 'E' Shape bar on 6th String

We slowed down the tempo and played this pattern round & round until everyone got the hang of it.

Beginners used the bass notes on the 6th string:

D=10th fret, C=8 10th fret, Bb=6th fret, A=5th fret.

Then we introduced the other Verse Chords:

| F / / / | F / / / | C / / / | C / / / | Bb / / / | Bb / / / | Dm / / / | Bb / / / | C / / / | C / / / |

After this we went back to Wicked Game & Creep...

Week 3: Sat 11th March

We continued with our 2 songs, started with warm up on Wicked Game and really focussed on timing & counting bars. Whenever we swayed off the metronome - we started again. With a pause to count in mentally, then to verbally count in 1,2,3,4.

Week 2: Sat 4th March

We looked at different chord shapes, using a capo & most importantly... timing! I made suggestions to each musician, correcting some bad habits, proposing alternative chord positions & learning to listen for the 1st beat (which is accented on most modern metronomes).

We used a mobile metronome app & amplified it to an audible level, worked out a basic strumming pattern, counting-in and tried to keep time. The song we're working on is Wicked Game by Chris Isaak:

|:Bm /// |A /// | E/// | E/// :| repeat till end

Getting back To Your Passion

It's great to see Keith enjoying and refreshing his finger-memory and playing shapes all over the guitar. I'm reaching out to all of you guitarist who left it behind for work, love or family... coming back to it with a refreshing zest and enthusiasm. When you start to learn an instrument, you start a life-long relationship with music.

It's never too late or too early to start. So dig out that guitar from the attic & get down to our workshops... Alternatively, we are open for donations of instruments too! We'll find a good home for it or auction it to raise funds for more workshops & events to spotlight local talent.

Music is social, a great discipline & good for focusing the mind for concentration.

The most important thing for me is to help learners express their passion for music. One thing is guaranteed - Music is a friend for life!

Brian started playing guitar during lockdown. He's been playing rhythm & singing. Now he's having a go at lead. Working that minor pentatonic blues in B.

22 years but never lost the bug

I play a fender myself. It was great to see 3 of them at the workshop!

Pat playing clean and open chords as well as bar chords.

Absolute Beginners & Percussionists welcome

Tim is playing a classical jumbo guitar that was gifted to me by my good friend and music journalist Huw Roberts ( a wealth of inside knowledge to the music industry & bands histories). Jane joined us with her Darbuka - traditionally played to accompany bellydance & much more entertaining than my metronome or looper pedal.

Vocalist: Learning To Strum Guitar always makes you self-reliant

DJ Drew & Soul-Singer Andrew enjoying the coffee & biscuits? Playing some funky bass lines

to give more depth to the sound.

Help us restore donated guitars to give to our students that want to give it a try!
